Even though oranges are not local to where I live in Canada, the colours of this piece always remind me of the beginning notes of summer. The orange and peach hues used here against the green foreground remind me of the orchards where I grew up in Niagara, Ontario and all the summer fruit I indulged in as a child.

Taken from a reference photo, I love the simplicity of this piece. Bright greens against the minimalist white and vivid blue foreground of the tea towel. Most of the time, I enjoy painting these minimalist still lifes best. The meditative aspect of watching the buttery richness of the oil paint be applied by my brushes and turning those brushstrokes into an image that looks and feels like the energy I’m feeling when I’m painting it.
